F.A.Q.

Here are answers to some of the most asked questions:

What do I need to get started?
All you really need is an instrument, a secured lesson time and a willingness to learn. I will personally make arrangements, with you, if there are any lesson materials needed based on your personalized lessons. For a  list of other things that are beneficial to have, check out my Setting Up A Practice Space page. Feel free to download the PDF as well!

Which online platform do you use for teaching?
I have been using both Zoom and Discord. More of my students have  switched to Discord as I have been finding the quality of both audio and video to be superior.

What is the youngest, and oldest, a person can start lessons?
This is another answer that shouldn’t be over simplified. I have successfully taught students as young as 5 years old. With children, the main thing to consider is attention span. Since attention spans can vary greatly, even among children of the same age, you need to look at each child as an individual. Some instructors have a set age they will start teaching. I don’t do it that way because, if a child has an interest and is told they are too young, without properly assessing them, it can discourage them from trying later on.

As far as the oldest age you can learn… there is no limit. If you have the desire to play, and you have mobility of your hands,  you can learn.

How long should I take lessons for?
This question is also related to “how long will it take me to learn my instrument?” There is no simple answer but learning a musical instrument does take time and dedication. Musical goals can differ, from wanting to strum a few campfire songs to playing music professionally or anywhere in between. Your goals may even change as you progress but you will know when you have reached them. I can help you navigate along the way.

How do I pay for my lessons?
Currently e-Transfers are the best payment method while I am teaching online. If that is not possible we can discuss other options.

When do I pay for my lessons?
Your first month’s fees are due in advance and are also used to secure your spot. Subsequent fees are due, in full, before the first calendar day of each month.

What if I have to miss a lesson?
Contact me by phone call, text or email (my personal email, not the website contact form) and I will do my best to reschedule.

  • Lessons missed due to emergencies will always be rescheduled.
  • Lessons missed without notice (non-emergency) may not be rescheduled
  • Missed lessons are not subtracted from lesson fees.

What if my instructor has to miss a lesson?
You will be given as much notice as possible, and your lesson will always be re-scheduled.

Are there lessons in the Summer months?
Yes, lessons are available throughout July and August and I offer flexibility lesson scheduling to accommodate your summer holidays and activities. For full details see my Summer Lessons page.

What do I do when I will no longer be taking lessons?
I simply ask that you inform me at the beginning of, or before, your last month of lessons. This is to allow me to be able to offer the spot to new lesson inquirers. It helps me to maintain a healthy schedule and is much appreciated.
